Rinzler reading

After reading Rinzler’s Two Visions I have gained a better concept of the difficult process it takes to make a film. When I see amazing movies like Star Wars I just assume everything went well during the making of it, which is why a good film was produced. I also thought it was interesting how Lucas tried to incorporate his ideas from Apocalypse Now into Star Wars. From our readings on Twyla Tharp and George Lucas through the Rinzler chapter, screenplay writers have different ways of doing their work, but a recurring theme amongst them is that they need to be trained to sit down and simply write. By being in a state of simply letting the words flow through you, the screenplay writing will reflect an inner creativity that you might not have come across by writing a more stiff paper. One aspect that surprised me was how the names changed throughout the making. As I wrote my script for the movie I just picked random names, and didn’t think much of it. Clearly my script writing is not as good as George Lucas.Screenplay writing also calls our creative sides into play and you can learn how to better accommodate your creative process through this writing technique.

How did it feel going into writing a script with people you maybe didn’t know?

How often did your group meet?

What were problems that came up?

Would you do it again?

What exactly was your role in the entire proccess?

“script doctor”:

I would change eveything about “The Notebook” script. I must admit the movie is wonderful, I’ve seen it over a dozen times and thats just this week. (kiding of course) I’ve seen it to many times to the point that I don’t enjoy it anymore. The first dozen times I thought it was amazing but I now I just think its just one big CORNY movie. Just another fairy tale, a disney movie for the little kids I would say. More like pg 13. If you take out the one or two sex scences its just one big corny cinderlla movie. I love drama and thrill. I would have had the them fight a little more. A little more drama between the families.

I found the ending to be so sweet AT FIRST btu now its like they left me hanging at the end. Like what happenes next.

My bliss is . . .

My bliss is… helping others and sleep

I love to help others. That’s exactly why I’ve decided to major in Social Work. I find some type of happiness in helping others find happiness and/or comfort. I ‘ve been helping people i my hometown community for ages. (Well since my freshmen year of high school, which feels like ages) I LOVE SLEEP. Sleep should be a offer as a major here. (I dont know what type of job I would get but sounds nice) The day is order by when I can sleep. I have all of my classes at one part of the day. Just so when I’m done with class I get to take a nap and wouldn’t have to worry about having a class when I wake up. That’s why I never go back to my dorm between class because I would go to sleep. On a good day without work or assignments I get about 10 hours of sleep. (Combined of course) Helping others and sleeping is blissful.

Romeo and Juliet comes to U of I

We all know Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet romantic tragedy. Boy falls for girl, girl’s and boy’s families are enemies, and they eventually die. Well what if we put a little U of I twist on it. With little romance and a lot of drama and unfortunate events. (A little more realistic)How about Busey-Evans hall (all girls) vs. Townsend hall (all boys). Yes, Boy and girl will fall in love but a at bar on green street and. Instead of their names being Romeo and Juliet their names will be Mike and Jessica. Their parents aren’t the ones that do not approve of the relationship it’s their college advisers. The girl is from the college of media and the boy is from the college of business. The Mikes adviser and friends thinks Jessica is beneath him just because of the college shes in. Instead of fighting the college they they hide out in FAR every night just to get away from the negative comments. The adviser arr so involved in their lives they start to post rude comments on their facebook pages and coming to their dorms every night to make sure they were there.  They pretend to break up and run away. Now neither of them have a college degree and they’re on the road alone.  They’re sleeping in random hotels and skipping out of payments. Both of their parents have disowned them so, they’re solely on their own. How they will survive they is now a daily question. NO HAPPY ENDING HERE.

“Prologue: the monomyth” response

“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”- Campbell

This excerpt was a little hard to comprehend, I found it hard to connect the quotes and understand exactly what he was trying to say. However, I liked “Tragedy and Comedy”chapter better than the “the Hero and the God.” Campbell says “the fairy  tale of happiness ever after cannot be taken seriously;  it belongs to the never-never land of childhood.”  I do understand where he is coming from. I completely agree, the happy ends in stories are unrealistic. In society today, living up to a fairy ending isn’t easy eventually you will be giving up some typr of happiness.  After this I was completely lost, I am going to need some clarification in class of the rest of the excerpt.

Quality,Poetic, and Drama connection

My three words are quality, poetic, and drama. My list of directors, artists, writers, and books shows the type of media I love. All of the directors I mentioned all had in my opinion quality films and they pride themselves for them. Angelina Jolie performance in Salt was amazing that’s the type of drama I like. I love Toni Morrison books she presents drama and such a poetic way. Some may call them controversial  but that’s another type drama I love.  Tim Burton and Johny Depp are two odd people in my list of influencful people. They are so funny and entertaining that I can’t keep them off the list.

Lucasfilm.com

The main page of the lucasfilm site was very flashy, forceful, and lively. From the main page I expected the entire site to be the same. However, the “Inside Lucasfilm” page wasn’t as lively but it got the message across. The main page made it known that you were at a site for and about Star Wars; the “Inside Lucasfilm” page lower the liveliness and picked up the information. which was expected. Going in to the “Inside Lucasfilm” page I was surprised that the typefaces they picked were modern unlike the movie and the main page. When thinking of Star Wars flashing lights and loud sounds come to mind, this site had more of a academic feel to it . The “Inside Lucasfilm” page was typed in a small font when they clearly had the entire big to be flashy and loud. They also stayed with the small font and style of presenting the information for the entire site. The visual transitions, animations, drawings added a little more to the cite but not enough to live up to the actual movie that is Star Wars. In relation to the drawings and the text both were a little small for the genre of Star Wars. I would of loved to see huge pictures, flashing lights, and words that are in a readable size.
